In Celebration of Fanny Hensel's 200th Birthday

Fanny Hensel, nee Mendelssohn, baptized Bartholdy (1805-1847) was one of the most original composers of Romantic Europe with an oeuvre that encompasses more than 400 works, among them 250 songs, a wealth of piano music, a string quartet, an orchestral overture, as well as choral music, including four cantatas, an oratorio and „dramatic scenes¾ for voice and orchestra. Born into one of the leading intellectual families of her time, young Fanny Mendelssohn was surrounded by philosophy, poetry, music and art, yet caught between the limitations imposed on women of her time and her longing to compose at the highest level.

Ursel Schlicht, Ph.D., will give a profile of this outstanding musician and introduce a selection of her major works, situating Fanny Hensel in the context of the artistic, philosophical, political and religious climate of 19th century Germany.
