Ursel Schlicht and Hans Tammen began playing jazz together in 1989 and started developing their sonically multifaceted STATEMENTS – series of short and focused improvisations centering on one single idea– by 1991. STATEMENTS is about the challenge of constantly reaching for new sonic possibilities and instantly expressing them with great clarity, comparable to a single brush stroke in Japanese calligraphy. Schlicht and Tammen experimented with preparing their instruments using a darabouka drum on the bass strings of the piano or pieces of metal, stone, wood, etc., they equally explored acoustic parameters such as a basic interval of a fifth on the piano contrasted by guitar played with a ring modulator, and a rich palette of pieces stemming from this phase is presented on their CD STATEMENTS.

Originally released in 1995 on the collectively run German label Hybrid Music, the features 30 short pieces: two series called Werkstatt I and II (“workshops”) each using the inside of the piano and prepared guitar, two series called Skizzen I and II, (“sketches”, without any preparations), seven STATEMENTS organized independently, a guitar solo, and two original compositions: "Pensive Vladeck" by Schlicht and "Castelnaudary Surprise" by Tammen. This is their first CD as leaders, offering an innovative and personal approach, and Cadence Magazine enthusiastically commented “These echos of the sonic revolution are uniformly well-rendered” (Milo Fine, Cadence 1997)

Ursel Schlicht und Hans Tammen spielen seit 1989 zusammen. In der Anfangsphase interpretierten sie Jazz-Standards, begannen dann zunehmend auch freier zu improvisieren. 1991 markiert den Anfang einer Phase, in der sie systematisch musikalische Parameter improvisatorisch erforschen und ihr STATEMENTS-Konzept entwickeln: kurze und prägnante Skizzen, in der Ideen ähnlich einem Pinselstrich in japanischer Kalligraphie hingeworfen werden, mit dem Ziel, das musikalische Vokabular von Gitarre und Piano zu erweitern und mit dem Duo einen eigenen Sound zu entwickeln.

Schlicht and Tammen präparierten ihre Instrumente mit Metall, Stein, Holz, Papier, kleinen Motoren oder auch einer Darabouka Trommel auf den Bass-Saiten des Flügels. Gleichermassen nahmen sie rein akustische Instrumentalklänge unter die Lupe, z. B. spielt das piano in einem STATEMENT ausschliesslich Quinten, kontrastiert von Gitarre mit Ringmodulator. Die facettenreiche Soundpalette, die hier entstand, ist auf ihrer ersten CD STATEMENTS dokumentiert.

Die CD wurde 1995 von Hybrid Music Productions, einem kollektiv organisierten Label für experimentelle und improvisierte Musik, veröffentlicht und bietet nicht weniger als 30 Stücke: zwei Serien heissen Werkstatt I and II. Hier wird mit Objekten im Innenraum des Pianos und auf der Gitarre experimentiert. Zwei weitere Serien heissen Skizzen I and II und arbeiten rein akustisch (daher auch die klassisch anmutenden Ttiel wie vivace oder misterioso), dann gibt es sieben weitere alleinstehende STATEMENTS, ein Gitarrensolo, und jeweils eine Komposition, "Pensive Vladeck" (Schlicht) und "Castelnaudary Surprise" (Tammen). “These echos of the sonic revolution are uniformly well-rendered!” lobte das amerikanische Cadence Magazine (Milo Fine, Cadence 1997).

Hans Tammen links concepts of modern electronic composition with the energy of free jazz playing and European improvisational strategies. Projects include site-specific performances and collaborative efforts with dance, light or video. He has released CDs with Denman Maroney, Michael Vorfeld, Herb Robertson, Steve Swell, Ursel Schlicht, Dominic Duval and Jay Rosen. Recent collaborations and ensembles include musicians like Tony Oxley, Keith Rowe, Nick Didkovsky, Paul Lytton, Dafna Naphtali, Theo Bleckmann, Mike Cooper, John Butcher, Alfred Harth, Lawrence Casserley, dancer Fine Kwiatkowski and video artists Kurt Ralske and Benton Bainbridge. His works have been presented in the US, Canada, Mexico, Russia and all over Europe.
