SonicExchange (english)

SonicExchange reaches audiences where underserved communities meet with already active cultural communities. The series, now active for twelve years, focuses each time music plus interdisciplinary or intercultural components. This year, photography is part of a project for the first time. At Neue Brüderkirche the “Improvisation out of Silence” evenings reached a new audience, often new to improvisation. The focus on music and culture from Afghanistan did not lose its relevance and will continue to grow in 2024.

Projects in 2024

  1. Photo+Sound.
Improvisationen inspired by images of documenta fifteen, taken by Tanja Kurzenknabe render intense impressions of art shown documenta fifteen in Kassel during the summer of 2022.
  2. Tabla-Piano-Bass: Trio with Shams Hashemi, Ursel Schlicht, Rolf Denecke
  3. Documentation and Hommage to Dr. Salamat Schiftah, scientist, musician, poet and ambassador of Afghan culture.
Dr. Salamat Schiftah participated in projects of Ursel Schlicht in documenta years 2002, 2007, 2012, 2017 and 2022. He passed away in January 2023. An examination of the artistic part of his estate will add to the documentation done so far. Planned are also interviews with colleagues and family. A trailer can be seen here.

  4. Improvisation out of Silence
“Improvisation out of Silence” began inspired by the sound installation “Breathing Meditation” shown during documenta fifteen at Neue Brüderkirche, Kassel. A monthly open invitation to a very divers community offers group improvisations. The events are guided by Ursel Schlicht and pastor Stefan Nadolny.

“Jeder Mensch bringt eine eigene Stimme mit in die Welt.

Niemand klingt so wie ein anderer.

Man muss lernen, dieses Ureigene besonders zu pflegen.

Dann kann man auf dieser Basis mit anderen spielen.

Man muss sich dann nicht auf eine gemeinsame Stilistik einigen.

Der eigene Stil ist dann wie ein Dialekt einer gemeinsamen Sprache”

(Karl Berger, Gründer des Creative Music Studio, 2016)
